The United States Coast Guard had unfortunately lost a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter in LaPush, WA. The aircraft was headed to its home port in Sitka, AK when it went down in the Pacific Ocean. The aircraft recovery was completed utilizing a Columbia Boeing 234 Chinook Helicopter. The size of the helicopter used for the salvage operation was dictated in part by the location and hazardous surf locations in the area. Ballard Commercial divers utilized a grid pattern search technique of the entire area in an effort to recover even the smallest pieces of the wreckage.
Once components were safely recovered Ballard HazMat teams performed the lightering of fuel, transportation and logistics of the aircraft pieces to a set storage location for investigation by government agencies.
The job was done safely, without incident and done with respect to those who lost their lives during the casualty.
