Ballard Introduces our “new” Robotics and Survey Division

Ballard recently rebranded its Remote Sensing and Technology Group to reflect a new strategy for 2023 and beyond. Now known as the Robotics and Survey Division (RSD), the name change clearly identifies the strengths and areas of expertise, regardless of market sector, and capitalizes on the burgeoning use of ROVs (Remote Operated Vehicles) and AUVs (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) in all lines of business globally.  Coupled with capital investment, the move will capitalize on Ballard’s already stellar reputation for providing quality inspections.

As a standalone Division, RSD will focus on markets serviced by Ballard and bring additional work to Ballard’s existing business units.

Already having an impact…

A recent example of how RSD can help provide cost-effective solutions is best described through a project to retrieve a large, over 3000lb, roller chain assembly from the bottom of an intake structure.

With the chain submerged in over 200 feet of water, all options were considered. Mobilizing divers and using mixed gas would be expensive and require additional mobilization time, so the team agreed to use RSD’s expertise with a small Defender ROV. The innovative approach included threading both a creative messenger line system and subsequent rigging to guide the winch hook onto the slings. Once complete, winches, in tandem, pulled over 3000lbs of chain to the surface to be discarded. The use of the ROV also meant that a dive team was not required, saving the client both time and money. The retrieval was done in a very timely manner, safely, and for far less cost than using mixed gas divers.

Tom Robertson, Vice President of RSD, states “This is another outstanding example of Ballard working together to do what’s best for our clients and safest for our people. Our communication, teamwork, and ability to overcome obstacles our clients need help with, in a safe and cost-effective manner, is a cornerstone of the Ballard reputation.”
